2005.08.28:
A small but lovely article from Star-Telegram.
A History of Violence

In the 1980s, the great David Cronenberg gave us Videodrome, The Fly and Dead Ringers -- creepy-crawly thrillers of extraordinary intellectual and philosophical reach. Alas, Cronenberg's work in the '90s (including the sci-fi head-scratcher eXistenZ and the car-wreck orgy melodrama, Crash) turned a tad hermetic and arty. A History of Violence, which premiered in May at Cannes, is said to be a major return to form for the director. Based on a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, it's about a small-town man (Viggo Mortensen) defending his family from a gaggle of bad guys led by Ed Harris. Say this much for it already: It has perhaps the best title we've heard in years. Sept. 23 in Dallas, Sept. 30 wide
Also Ottawa seems to get Sept. 23 for the release day?

2005.08.26:
A History of Violence will be screened at New Montreal FilmFest (September 18 th to 25 th, 2005), too.

Three booklets as well as individual tickets for special events will go on sale this Saturday, August 27th at noon.

2005.08.24:
HBO FIRST LOOK will feature aHoV from Mon 9/12.
Running Time: 13 minutes
Genre: This special delves inside David Cronenberg's adaptation of a graphic novel about a Middle America family man who must deal with the aftermath of his act of violence against two criminals. Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, William Hurt and Ed Harris star.

Anti-war protesters go after Bush at home

Bush offers sympathy to Vacaville mother Woman undeterred as anti-war vigil grows in Texas

...Among the supporters was actor Viggo Mortensen, co-star of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. He spent a few moments privately with Sheehan, thanking her for her protest.

Mortensen, a longtime activist and one of the first actors to wear an anti-war T-shirt on national television, gave Sheehan a raft of gifts: a handful of "No Blood for Oil" T-shirts he had painted; a copy of George Orwell's "Animal Farm"; a book by author and activist Howard Zinn; and "Twilight of Empire: Responses to Occupation," a book co-written by Jodie Evans, who is a top organizer with Sheehan's vigil.

In the eye of a storm

...As Sheehan rested in the van, Viggo Mortensen, star of "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, pulled up in a rental car and slipped into the van beside Sheehan.

The two talked quietly for a few moments, then Mortensen emerged.

"It was an honor to be able to meet her," the actor said.

"I'm not on vacation, but I managed to come out here to see her," he added, taking a verbal jab at the president.

2005.08.09:
The latest issue of Japanese Mag. "Brutus" has featured Bruce Weber. In fact, it's a real feature story issue covering more than 120 pages! In the article, a photo of Viggo is seen as one of the images among "TOUGHGUYS & crybabies". The image isn't new, however, I want to introduce (just a part of) them, since they have really lovely layout and captions:)
Hope you enjoy them! :)

2005.08.01:
A History of Violence Preview (ComingSoon.net, Augest 01, 2005)

2005.07.30:
About.com has an excellent interview with Director David Cronenberg. The director talks about Viggo very much :) Check it!
Cronenberg on "A History of Violence," Viggo Mortensen, and Studio Projects
Why Viggo Mortensen? What made him right for this particular role?

...eA Walk on the Moonf with Diane Lane, has a lot to do with it because in that movie, he's very gentle and sweet and tender. Usually he plays bad guys or scary guys, but I could see from that movie he could be very lovely as a gentle, sweet guy and very sexy as well.....
I wonder if this is a sort of love-letter from the director to Viggo! LoL

2005.07.30:
Not about aHoV but LotR.
"The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook (by Alan Lee)" will be published on October 19, 2005. I like Alan Lee's works pretty much :)

2005.07.30:
Yes, it's same as Cannes', but seems to be decided for the official poster for aHoV ?

2005.07.26:

'Oscar Watch: 15 movies winning early buzz'
From Entertainment Weekly (22, July, 2005)

2005.07.23:
Oscar buzz has began.
Viggo's name appears among "Oscar 2005: Best Actors -- A Year of New Faces?" by Emanel Levy :)
Viggo Mortensen
Mortensen, who played the nominal lead in gLord of the Ringsh trilogy, nvere got credit for his contribution to Peter Jacksonfs epics; the only actor to be nominated was Ian McKellen for the first segment. Well-cast in Cronenbergfs morality tale gA History of Violence,h Mortensen gives a subtly haunting performance as a man torn by dual identity and tormented by his violent past.

2005.07.23:
He's so sweet :)

"Spur" (September, 2005)
The actors who play the sons of "the stars"
Ashton Holmes:
"Of course, I'm a huge fan of 'The Lord of the Rings', so I got nervous as thinking about 'I'm a son of the hero?,' however, I felt relaxed right away because Viggo was so friendly as if we're real a father and a child."
(He's) Baby-faced for 23 years old. It's obvious from Viggo Mortensen's expression fooling from behind him that they've bonded a good relationship.

2005.07.22:
"Photos" of New Line Cinema's publicity page for aHoV has been updated.

2005.07.16:
Another article about Comic-Con (AINT).
And more from Movieweb
He went on to explain that Josh Olson (the screenwriter with whom he worked) "wrote the script with Viggo in mind", but at that juncture Cronenberg was only "developing the script." He felt that on his short list of actors to play the lead role in the film, "Viggo is the perfect guy not only as actor but where he is in his life." He also went on to explain that there were other politics that went into the casting decision, such as "was Viggo happy with New Line after ?" He also went on to explain that gbefore an actor is cast, anyone can play the role."...

In regards to the script development, Cronenberg wanted some changes to Josh Olsonfs sceenplay. "Originally there were no sex scenes... Olson hadnft written sex scenes so he was a little shy," he explained with a smile. Also, initially, Viggo Mortensen and William Hurt were not scripted brothers. This device was added because Cronenberg wanted to "deliver a taste from" Mortensen's past. Also, he felt this naturally led to a sort of "Cane and Abel"-type relationship. (Movieweb)

2005.07.15:
The second and third articles about Comic-Con.
Viggo Mortensen was Olson's first choice to play Tom Stahl. Olson wrote the Stahl role with Mortensen in mind after seeing the film, "The Indian Runner." (ComicBook.resouces)

"I can't say Viggo was the only one on my list, but he was always on my list." Citing his work in Lord of the Rings, he noted that Mortensen is "an underrated starc He's actually a superb, superb actor." (FilmForce)

About the Gala Presentation of aHoV

Both men recently showed the movies at Cannes but said the Toronto event has special significance.

"We all know that Cannes is terrific and fun, but this is the real festival, we all know that too," Cronenberg said to cheers from the crowd.

"So we go out to Cannes and we play and then we bring it back home. And that's the screening that's really the most meaningful to us."

2005.05.01:
Have forgot to add :)
Q: What are the main a characteristics of the films presented?
A: (...) There is also a return to classicism in the competition: Where the Truth Lies by Atom Egoyan is a psychological thriller (in cinemascope and in colour!), Don't Come Knocking by Wim Wenders, who continues his journey through America and its cinema, History of Violence by David Cronenberg, which adds its contribution to the classic storylines of "vengeance" films as well as his personal obsessions; (...)
...
Q: In terms of content, are there any common themes?
A: (...)Another theme explores violence in the world: the film by David Cronenberg not only has an emblematic title on the subject (History of Violence); it underlines that the violence of society will be, if we are not careful, that of the children who have grown up with it.
Do not make the mistake, however, of thinking that the films seem particularly dark or can be reduced to generalisations.
...
Q: Who can we expect to see on the Croisette this year?
Scarlett Johansson, Woody Allen, Michael Pitt, Asia Argento, Robert Downey Jr, Val Kilmer, Ewan McGregor, Samuel Jackson, Nathalie Portman, Danny Glover, Viggo Mortensen, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sharon Stone, Jessica Lange, Sam Shepard, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Shu Qi, Tommy Lee Jones, Zhang Ziyi, Carole Bouquet, Gael Garcia Bernal, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Tim Roth, Eva Marie Saint, Sarah Polley, Kevin Bacon, Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche, Benicio del Toro, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Edward Norton.
